“Education is Not a Prize” was an advocacy campaign led by Educación 2020, with the support of Centro de Justicia Educacional, América Solidaria, and ten other leading organisations in education. It garnered the backing of individuals and institutions from politics, academia, and civil society.
The initiative emerged in response to the “Just Admission” bill introduced by the government in 2018, which sought to reintroduce the right of public schools to select students based on academic performance and other criteria. “Education is Not a Prize” presented technical arguments demonstrating that this proposal constituted a setback in the pursuit of educational equity.
The campaign was launched in January 2019, receiving 6,024 visits on the first day. One week later, it had gathered 6,611 signatures on a petition—including endorsements from 69 experts and authorities, and 30 members of Congress—resulting in a 42% conversion rate (i.e. 42% of those who visited the landing page signed the petition).
Following an extended debate in Congress, the “Just Admission” bill was ultimately rejected.
